Ladies 2's make club history and end the first half of the season with a perfect record!
The final match before the Christmas break. A game which often sees players debating whether or not to turn out for one last time at the end of the year, or to just to let the game go, and immerse oneself in mince pies and silly jumpers. Unfortunately fate was to determine the latter with a low turn out in numbers.
After a lengthy debate in the SSP car park amongst the Captain and the available players, and a nervous wait to see if one player would turn up it was finally decided they would give the game a go regardless of having only 7 players, the minimum need for an approved match.
With the Ladies 2's majestically astride the top of the table with 15 points, it was agreed that no one wanted to forfeit this match, which would of seen points automatically deducted and a slip down to 2nd place. On arrival at the grounds of the Chertsey Thames Valley 2nd XI a team talk in the changing rooms opted for reserving energy, playing a more defensive game.
With tinsel in their pony tails and an air of camaraderie in the face of an expected tough game, the band of 7 took up positioning on the pitch, aiming to give the illusion of coverage. Whilst the CTV girls initially had more possession, the supreme tackling efforts of Soraya mid field / defence, saw the ball consistently returned onto a Spartans stick with some excellent left wing passes between new players Pippa and Eleanor.
The Spartans were able to get in amongst the CTV players, picking up a lot of their balls, however it took a while for the game to move up the pitch towards the desired goal, due to the CTV' s greater marking ability. With the Spartans repeatedly earning long corners, Anna Baker assisted with keeping the ball at the top end of the pitch, employing different tactics to get it back to a Spartan.
After the CTV girls were awarded a short corner, which was well defended by goalie Lauren's strong foot work, Cleo had the opportunity she had been lying in wait for, making a strong break running the ball up the pitch and successfully scoring. A miracle!
Half time could not come soon enough with everyone tired and praying that they could hold onto the lead so well earned. The second half saw some energetic and well placed runs by returning player Alice back towards the goal to assist with defending efforts, whilst Pippa was on hand to receive Soraya's powerful 16 yard hit outs. A foul in the D saw a short corner awarded to the Spartans, finished off with an accurate second goal from Cleo, taking the Spartans to a 2-nil victory.
This memorable game rounded off the Spartans Ladies 2XI's season with a complete track record for winning every one of their league games, but most note worthy, the game made Spartans club history as the first team ever to win a match with just 7 players. With a lengthy break over the Christmas and New Year, it's hoped this exciting formation of old and new players will come back together in 2015 for what should be a promising start to the second half of the season, GO TEAM SPARTAN!

Spartans Ladies 1s faced Addiscombe, an unfamiliar opposition, in their 3rd game of the season. With a couple of key players missing it was going to be a tough game, though they were fortunate enough to have the availability of Soraya and debutant fresher Grace to make up a strong team.
Due to their solid defence Spartans rarely concede short corners so when Addiscombe scored from one early on in the match, and against the run of play, there were some raised eyebrows both on and off the pitch.
The ladies responded swiftly with Becky soon getting the home team back on level terms. Unfortunately the visitors scored just as quickly from yet another short corner at the other end.
Up stepped Mandy for the Spartans to score an impressive equaliser and then an even more impressive individual goal after a long run up field through Addiscombe's defence to take the lead for the first time. Briefly.
The end to end play continued and Addiscombe, possibly learning from the Spartans determination, equalised themselves just before the half time whistle blew. 3-3, goals galore!
Some tactical switches from coach Taj at half time proved very effective after the restart.
With the ball passing more cleanly around the pitch it didn't take them too long to go back in to the lead with Anna putting the Spartans ahead once more.
From then on most of the play was in the oppositions end and the pressure applied was finally rewarded by a 5th goal for Spartans - Anna getting her second.
The defence remained strong, soaking up any counter attacks with ease and the ladies were content to see the game out comfortably with a 5-3 win. The ladies have started the new season well with 2 wins and a draw as the league now takes its customary, if somewhat inconvenient, half-term break.
