Ladies 1s continue confident start to the season.

Spartans Ladies 1s faced Addiscombe, an unfamiliar opposition, in their 3rd game of the season. With a couple of key players missing it was going to be a tough game, though they were fortunate enough to have the availability of Soraya and debutant fresher Grace to make up a strong team.

Due to their solid defence Spartans rarely concede short corners so when Addiscombe scored from one early on in the match, and against the run of play, there were some raised eyebrows both on and off the pitch.

The ladies responded swiftly with Becky soon getting the home team back on level terms. Unfortunately the visitors scored just as quickly from yet another short corner at the other end.

Up stepped Mandy for the Spartans to score an impressive equaliser and then an even more impressive individual goal after a long run up field through Addiscombe's defence to take the lead for the first time. Briefly.

The end to end play continued and Addiscombe, possibly learning from the Spartans determination, equalised themselves just before the half time whistle blew. 3-3, goals galore!

Some tactical switches from coach Taj at half time proved very effective after the restart.

With the ball passing more cleanly around the pitch it didn't take them too long to go back in to the lead with Anna putting the Spartans ahead once more.

From then on most of the play was in the oppositions end and the pressure applied was finally rewarded by a 5th goal for Spartans - Anna getting her second.

The defence remained strong, soaking up any counter attacks with ease and the ladies were content to see the game out comfortably with a 5-3 win. The ladies have started the new season well with 2 wins and a draw as the league now takes its customary, if somewhat inconvenient, half-term break.

Ladies 1s Show Resilience To Earn A Point In A Physical Contest

The 2nd game of the season saw Spartans Ladies 1s come up against Old Freeman's, a team that had gained promotion, along with them, last year.

Surrey Spartans Start The New Season With A Bang!

The new season has finally arrived after a long summer break. The Ladies 1st XI had the honour of taking to the home field for the first time this year with a match against the Ladies 6s of the Surrey based hockey powerhouse Surbiton Hockey Club. Following the Ladies 1st XI’s recent success in the 2014 Sport Guildford Awards, winning Team of the Year, the pressure for them to get off to a good start in their new league was high. To make things harder, Autumn decided to make a statement with the warm sunny weather of Friday replace with wind, rain and even hail! However it wasn’t long before the Ladies 1st XI showed that the team was not weakend despite the departure of a number of last season’s unbeaten promotion winning side. The ladies quickly dominated the Surbiton outfit with Hannah Lea openning the team’s account just minutes into the match. This was quickly followed by goals by in-form forward Rachael Faustino who notched up a hatrick in double quick time to put Surrey Spartans 4-0 up by half-time. A further two goals in the second half by Anna Fisher capped off a solid display by the ladies who were more than happy to head inside out of the rain with all 3 points. Final Score: Surrey Spartans Ladies 1st XI (6) – (0) Surbiton Ladies 6th XI. Goals: Rachael Faustino (3), Anna Fisher (2), Hannah Lea

Not to be outdone by the Ladies 1s, the Mens 1st XI also wanted to show that they mean business this season after narrowly missing out on the promotion playoffs last season. Their campaign got underway with a home tie against Croydon Old Whitgiftians HC. With some new faces welcomed into the side the team over the summer there was a strengthened confidence amongst the team and it showed with the team taking control of the match scoring two unanswered goals in the first half. Surrey Spartans looked to continue this dominance in the second half of what was becoming an increasingly physical game and managed to score a third via a penalty corner. Following a few “robust” challenges by Croydon the umpire went to his pocket a couple of times brandishing the Green Card. Sadly this was followed by a controversial decision to sin bin our "rock in defence", Ed Hodge, following a comparitevly minor infringement handing the initiative to Croydon. With Spartans down to 10 men, Croydon managed to get a foothold in the game and get a goal back. Playing with a man down took its toll on the Spartans players and as tiredness set in Croydon managed to sneak a second goal creating a tense final 10 minutes of the match. Spartans managed to gather themselves and nearly put themselves 2 goals clear again with some brilliant attacking play. The final whistle was a welcome sound. Final Score: Surrey Spartans Mens 1st XI (3) – (2) Croydon Old Whitgifitians Mens 1st XI. Goals: Alex Palfrey, Rob Plummer, Mark Scrivener

The Mens 3rd XI managed to make it a clean sweep of home victories with a 1-0 win over Epsom 5th XI (Goal: James Rumble) whilst the Ladies 2nd XI picked up 3 points on the road beating Old Kingstonians Ladies 4th XI 2-1 (Goals: Nat Cruttenden, Robyn Matthews). Sadly the Mens 2nd XI couldn’t quite make it an undefeated weekend for the Surrey Spartans as they narrowly lost 2-1 away to Epsom 3rd XI (Goal: Freddie Stacy). Overall an amazing start to the new season!
